TV show creator debunks wild myth Real Housewife inspired unforgettable character

When it comes to the glitz, glamour and sheer decadence of The Real Housewives of New York City, it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch for a Sex and The City character to be based on one of the show’s cast members. SATC oozes just the same cosmopolitan flair as RHONY in its olden days. And there’s a rumor flying around that Dorinda Medley inspired the character of Susan Sharon.

The Real Housewives of New York City features some of the chicest of the Housewives. Sonja Morgan, LuAnn de Lesseps, Ramona Singer, and Dorinda made up the OG cast. The ladies aren’t afraid to splash the cash and show off their wealth. Dorinda and Kelly Killoren Bensimon got into it about Hinckleys during The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip leaving many viewers “too poor to understand” totally confused.

Dorinda Medley and SATC’s Susan Sharon

Sex And The City fans were delighted when it was announced a revival and sequel of the series was coming out three years ago.

And Just Like That… saw the return of Carrie Bradshaw and co to our screens via HBO Max. Sarah Jessica Parker was joined on set by many of the main cast members including Charlotte and Miranda, played by Kristen Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

The series also saw Susan Sharon (played by Molly Price) return in scenes that had some fans asking questions.

While many were attempting to work out what Susan Sharon meant by calling Big a “pr***,” and others were scratching their heads over the moment she tells Carrie she “forgives” her, more are still under the impression the character was inspired by a Real Housewives icon.

Some SATC fans think Susan Sharon was based on Dorinda Medley. After all, the two women dabble in the Cashmere business and both had partners called Richard.

SATC creator debunks theory

Fans may have found links between Dorinda and Susan Sharon. But, it turns out to be one big myth that Dorinda was the character’s inspo.

Speaking on the Every Outfit podcast in April last year, SATC creator Candace Bushnell got onto the subject of The Real Housewives of New York.

No stranger to the reality TV world, Candace revealed she had her own show called Sex, Lies, and Videotapes, and she also once appeared on a Real Housewives show.

She said she’d “known Ramona Singer since the eighties” and talked about going out with LuAnn de Lesseps, adding how “everyone recognizes her” when they’re together.

However, she was less close with Dorinda.

The podcast hosts asked Candace about the character of Susan Sharon: “To know that you do not know Dorinda that well means that Susan Sharon is not based on Dorinda.”

She said: “No, no absolutely not. Susan Sharon is based on someone who Darren Star and I know. Most of those people are based on someone that Darren and I know.”

It turns out the RHONY alum has some similarities to Susan Sharon’s character but their connections to New York and Cashmere are where it starts and ends.
